Real Americans
Play the real American song (Hulk Hogan theme song).
'. . . (A) house divided against itself shall not stand.'
- Matthew 12:25
Are you a real American? Is a gay guy working to defeat Proposition 8 and planning his wedding a real American? Are members of Code Pink who protest the war in Iraq real Americans? Is my friend who donates to Democratic candidates and who happens to be an atheist a real American? If you support a progressive tax code with higher taxes on the wealthy, are you a real American?
Conservative Republicans lately have been drawing a troubling distinction.
Last week, Minnesota Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann told MSNBC's Chris Matthews, 'I wish the American media would take a great look at the views of the people of Congress and find out if they're pro-America or anti-America.'
McCain senior adviser Nancy Pfotenhauer recently dismissed Barack Obama's polling success in Virginia, saying, '. . . But the rest of the state, real Virginia, if you will, I think will be very responsive to Sen. McCain's message.'
Last weekend, North Carolina Rep. Robin Hayes, opening for John McCain at a rally, said, 'Folks, there's a real America, and liberals hate real Americans that work, and accomplish, and achieve, and believe in God.'
And Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin in Greensboro, N.C., last week told a crowd that they were part of 'the real America' and reveled in the 'pro-America areas' of the country. She later issued a generic apology.
What is required to be a real American? Well, I notice the crowds and towns these conservatives refer to as real Americans are usually not made up of minorities. And real Americans come from small towns, not large cities or urban areas.
Somehow just living in a town the size of an urban high school makes one more authentically American.
God is important to the equation, but not just any god. It's pretty clear you have to be a Christian to be a real American. If you're a Muslim, you might as well be an atheist on the real American scale.
If you're critical of your government or want your country to live up to its creed, you can't be a real American.
And obviously, a real American wouldn't support a socialist, secretly-Islamic, terrorist-coddling, white-flag-of-surrender-waving candidate like Barack Obama for president.
We're a nation that was built on dissent. Now 232 years later, we can't stomach differences of opinion? It's not enough that we simply disagree. Now we have to label others as un-American, anti-America or not real Americans.
Perhaps our unofficial motto, e. pluribus unum (out of many, one) should be changed to e. pluribus duo, since you're either a real American or one of 'them.'
We're facing more challenges in this country right now than most of us have seen in our lifetime. This should bring out the best in us, not the worst. Peace.
