Lebron Kong: Racist?
My friend Joyce asked me if I'd heard about the controversy surrounding the Vogue cover featuring basketball star Lebron James and model Gisele Bundchen. I hadn't. Apparently some feel that the open mouthed Lebron James on the cover with the white model on his home evokes comparisons to King Kong and Fay Wray. Some people say the picture is racist and offensive.
After viewing the cover, I think it's one of those cases where racism is in the eye of the beholder. On one level, putting a white model in the arms of a black athlete is inviting controversy. If you recall the controversy a few years ago when black WR Terrell Owens was paired with white Nicolette Sheridan in a promo during Monday Night Football, (Now granted the ad ran the same year Janet Jackson's nipple attacked America and everyone was pretending to be offended by anything remotely sexual, but many at the time felt black and white during primetime was what really set people off.)
But the photo, shot by Annie Liebovitz, is a beautiful photo. It was surely meant to be provocative and striking but to say there's a racist intent is silly. James has his game face on in the photo and it's a compelling picture.
That is......until I compared the photo against a still of the 1933 version of King Kong. My God! Its' Lebron Kong!

Now Lebron James is 23 years old, so obviously he didn't star in the 1933 film, but the resemblance is striking. First, look at the ape: Sloping brow, bared fangs, nostrils flared because of the scent of the woman in his grasp, long arms. Now look at King Kong on the right and you'll see an amazing resemblance.
Lebron James looks like he's ready to take Gisele Bundchen and scale the Sears Tower or something. I hope there was security on the set of that photo shoot or an animal trainer or bucket of bananas or something to keep the Negro in check.
I'm just messin' around. Having a little fun. No disrespect. It's a joke. A JOKE, people. I decided to put this here on my personal blog because the newspaper would catch hell if I wrote this kind of humor over there. They'd be saying how racist it was and offensive.
