They'd Have To Be CRAZY to Kill Saddam!

The Iraqi High Tribunal appellate court upheld Saddam Hussein’s death sentence and stated that it must be carried out within 30 days. What are they thinking? The solution to the whole Iraq mess is right in their hands and they’re about to squander it.

It’s obvious that George W. Bush stepped in Shiite when he chose to invade Iraq. It’s been a basketcase ever since. Looting, shooting, IEDs and maimings, as well as a US death toll greater than 9/11 has proven the mission was never accomplished there.

The solution is simple. We say, “Oops! We had no idea y’all were so dysfunctional. Our bad.” And we put Saddam back in charge and bring our troops home.

What have we been trying Saddam for anyway? Killing his own people back in the 80’s? C’mon, we didn’t care at the time. Have those people’s lives suddenly acquired meaning to us? We’ve stood by while African nations have hacked themselves to pieces. Surely we can turn a blind eye while Saddam straightens Iraq out.

Okay, I know Iraq was no picnic when Saddam was in power. He killed and tortured people, sort of like what’s going on there right now. But car bombs weren’t going off in Baghdad. There weren’t bodies found in the street every morning. There was no Al-Qaida in Iraq group operating there.

Back when Saddam was in power, we didn’t have to worry about the Iranians. After all, Saddam hated them, too. He was our buffer against idiots like the Holocaust-denying, Israel threatening, nuclear weapons building Iranian President.

Now I don’t mean to be a pessimist but look at Iraq today. If the greatest military the world has ever seen can’t stop the chaos going on there, what is the hope that some Iraqi soldiers not nearly as well-trained or equipped are going to be able to do it?

Let’s be honest. A Jeffersonian democracy has about as much chance of taking hold there as the masses converting to Christianity. So what’s wrong with putting Saddam back, hauling tail out of there and letting him go all Abu Ghraib on the warring factions?

Saddam Hussein is experienced in handling uprisings. He knows how to govern an Iraq teeming with ethnic and religious tensions. No, he won’t exactly be winning any awards from Amnesty International but desperate situations call for desperate measures.

Once Saddam is executed, many Sunnis will see him as a martyr. Even people who can’t stand Saddam are likely to exploit his death. It’s a lose-lose proposition.

Don’t execute our last chance at a stable Iraq. Unleash the Butcher of Baghdad and let him do what we aren’t willing to do.
