A Red Line Around The Planet

The assassination of former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto is sad but not surprising. I know some speculate that Musharraf was behind it but one has to remember that radical Islamists have tried to kill Musharraf 9 times. Now, I don't doubt that Musharraf is probably pleased at this news but I doubt he had a direct hand in it. It's more likely the military intelligence had a hand in it. Perhaps had a hand in providing shoddy security.

We're in bed with smarmy dictators. We always have been. Aligning ourselves with the Saudi royal family and the unpopular Mubarak in Egypt as well as Musharraf in Pakistan have ticked off a lot of people. Of course, our lockstep with Israel has won us no favors in the Middle East. A lot of the terrible people we're in bed with are just less terrible than the alternatives.

I've always thought we should draw a line in red paint around the globe and tell the Islamo-Fascists that you guys stay on THAT side of the line and live in 600 AD and we'll stay on THIS side of the line and live in 2007. I mean, we have value systems and beliefs that just don't mesh. I don't know how to get them to see eye to eye.

Why should you give a crap about what happens in Pakistan? Because it's the most dangerous, volatile country in the world despite what we've heard the past few years. Iraq was never a danger to the U.S. Iran is not a direct threat to the U.S. North Korea doesn't want war with the U.S. Despite what George Bush has done to the U.S. Army, every country knows that it would be devastating to have the U.S. military conduct operations on their soil. They know that we have ICBMs and SLBMs that can rain nuclear armageddon on any country in the world with pinpoint accuracy.

What about Pakistan? Well, they have nuclear weapons. They have nuclear weapons that they've fitted to ballistic missiles. They've exported that technology to North Korea. They may have done so to Iraq, too. And if they kill Musharraf and a Taliban/Al-Qaeda Dead-Ender seizes power and control over their nuclear weapons, all bets are off. If you have a suicidal cult ready to die, then there's no deterrent. There's nothing to stop them from attacking their sworn enemy India. Or, for that matter, having India launch a preemptive nuclear strike on Pakistan. Or them stealing a nuclear warhead and smuggling it to U.S. shores. Or smuggling to U.S. interests abroad. Or exporting their scientific know-how to other regimes.

Pakistan is the crazy aunt in the attic. And she just got crazier.
